About the Galleri MCED Test

What is the Galleri test?

Galleri is a multi-cancer early detection test that can be taken as a simple annual blood test and screens for many of the deadliest cancers before they become symptomatic.

The Galleri MCED test gives you more control when it comes to cancer.

In a clinical study, the test was able to detect a signal shared by more than 50 types of cancer. See the list of cancer types study participants had when a cancer signal was detected.

The test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False positive and false negative results do occur.

How does the Galleri test look for cancer?

Cancers growing in the body shed DNA into the bloodstream.  Although there are many types of cancer, the DNA fragments can act like a unique “fingerprint” of cancer.

The Galleri MCED test screens for many of the deadliest cancers before they become symptomatic, including those without recommended screening tests. When there is a Cancer Signal Detected, the results also provide predicted Cancer Signal Origin to help your healthcare provider determine the next steps for diagnosis.

Galleri MCED Test Advantages

1. Detects Many Cancers with a Single Blood Draw

Traditional cancer screenings (mammograms, colonoscopies, PSA tests) target one type of cancer at a time. Galleri screens for over 50 types of cancer simultaneously, many of which have no recommended routine screening tests (e.g., pancreatic, ovarian, esophageal).

2. Can Detect Cancer Early — Often Before Symptoms

Many cancers are detected only after symptoms appear, when they may be harder to treat. Galleri can find cancer at earlier stages, increasing the chance of simpler and more successful interventions.

3. Pinpoints the Likely Tissue of Origin

If Galleri detects a cancer signal, it also indicates where in the body the cancer likely started. This helps your medical team focus diagnostic efforts and avoid unnecessary testing.

4. Non-Invasive and Convenient

A simple blood draw — no fasting, no imaging, no sedation, no invasive procedures.

Can be completed at a local lab during a routine visit.

5. Reduces "Unknown Primary" Cases

Sometimes cancers are discovered after they spread, with the original site unknown.

Galleri may reduce these cases by helping identify the source earlier.

6. Designed for Use Alongside Standard Screening

It’s not meant to replace recommended cancer screenings like colonoscopies or mammograms. Instead, it fills the gap by screening for many other deadly cancers that have no standard tests.

7. Personal Empowerment and Peace of Mind

For many, knowing they are proactively screening for hard-to-detect cancers brings relief. Even if no signal is detected, many patients report peace of mind after testing.

What Galleri Does Not Do

It does not diagnose cancer — it detects a cancer signal. A positive result requires further diagnostic testing to confirm and locate cancer. It is not yet FDA approved for routine cancer screening but is CLIA-certified and available by prescription.

Who can take the Galleri MCED test?

The Galleri MCED test is recommended for use in adults with an elevated risk for cancer, such as those aged 50 or older.

Use of Galleri MCED test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment.

I am not at risk for cancer nor do I have a family history, is this test really for me?

More than 1 in 3 people will develop cancer in their lifetime. People over the age of 50 have a 13 times higher risk for cancer than those under 50.

Cancer risk increases for everyone as they age, regardless of family history — only 5% to 10% of cancers are inherited.

Oncologists' Perspective on MCED Tests

Learn More About Cancer Risk

What cancers does the Galleri MCED test screen for?

In a clinical study, Galleri detected a signal shared by over 50 types of cancer —including some fast-spreading and aggressive cancers responsible for approximately two-thirds of cancer deaths.

The Galleri MCED is a cancer screening test, meaning it looks for cancer before symptoms appear. The test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. False positive and false negative results do occur.

How accurate is the Galleri test?

Nearly 99% of people who take the Galleri test will receive a No Cancer Signal Detected result. A Cancer Signal Detected result is expected in approximately 1% of Galleri tests in people over 50 years of age. After diagnostic evaluation, around 40% of these people are expected to have a confirmed cancer diagnosis.

Some of the ways we measure test accuracy is with positive predictive value (PPV) and a false positive rate. A PPV is the probability that a person with a Cancer Signal Detected test result has cancer. In a recent study the PPV was 43.1% for study participants with a Cancer Signal Detected result who were diagnosed with cancer. The false positive rate was 0.5% for participants without cancer.

Can the Galleri test provide a genetic risk assessment and predict future risk?

The Galleri MCED is a point-in-time test that identifies DNA in the bloodstream shed by cancer cells and screens for cancer at the time of testing.

A genetic or hereditary risk assessment is a one time only measurement and assesses your future risk of developing cancer.

Dr. Sally offers the 3x4 Genetics test - as the operating manual your body should’ve come with.

Is the Galleri test available outside the US?

No, the Galleri MCED test is commercially available in the US only.

Is the blood draw cost included with purchasing the Galleri test?

The blood draw is included in the price of the test if scheduled with one of our lab partners.

Find a time and location convenient for you to schedule your blood draw at home, at your doctor’s office, or at a partner lab by a trained technician.

What are my options if I cannot afford the Galleri MCED test?

A flexible payment plan offered by the test’s manufacturer, Grail, may assist you with 0% interest for up to 12 months.

Learn how to enroll by calling Grail Customer Service at (833) 694‑2553.

Is the Galleri MCED test covered by health insurance?

A limited number of health insurance plans currently cover the Galleri MCED test.

The Galleri test is now covered for eligible beneficiaries through TRICARE. Prior authorization is required.

The test represents a significant innovation in cancer screening and coverage with payers will continue to evolve over time.

Patients may elect to pay for the test themselves and/or check with their insurer for coverage before requesting the test.

Can I use my HSA/FSA to pay for the Galleri test?

You may be able to use pre-tax dollars in your flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) to pay for the Galleri test.

Check with your FSA or HSA administrator or insurance provider to determine eligibility.

Slower: If phlebotomy scheduling or shipping gets delayed (holidays, remote areas), it could take 5–6 weeks.

How do I complete my blood draw?

When you’re ready to take the Galleri MCED test, you can schedule your blood draw at a time and place convenient for you, either at one of our partner labs or your home, office, or any preferred location by a trained technician.

Be sure to schedule your appointment early in the week so your sample is able to be delivered to the lab as quickly as possible.

What happens to my blood sample when it is received at the lab?

Learn more about how your sample is processed at the lab by watching this video.

How do I handle the collection kit once I receive it?

First, do not break the quality seal on your sample collection kit. The kit should be opened by the trained technician who draws your blood sample.

Make sure you store it at room temperature until your blood draw appointment. The contents are sensitive to extreme temperatures.

For example, avoid storing your collection kit in the trunk of your car for long periods of time.

How do I get the test to the lab after my blood draw?

The trained technician who draws your blood will pack and ship your sample back to the laboratory for processing.

Do I need to fast before the blood draw?

No fasting is required.

How much blood is drawn for the test?

Approximately 1.5 tablespoons (or about 20 mL) of blood in two tubes is typically drawn from a vein in your arm.

Test Results

When will Galleri MCED test results be available?

Your sample will normally arrive at the lab two business days after your blood draw.

Test results will be available about two weeks after your sample is received at the lab.

What does it mean if I receive a “No Cancer Signal Detected” result?

The Galleri MCED test did not detect DNA methylation patterns that are associated with cancer in your blood sample. Nearly 99% of people who use the Galleri test, will receive a No Cancer Signal Detected result. False negative results do occur.

This result does not completely rule out the possibility of cancer. The test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood. This result does not predict whether you will develop cancer in the future.

The Galleri MCED test can be taken as an annual blood test. Adding the test to annual wellness visits allows you to go further with cancer screenings.

What does it mean if I receive a “Cancer Signal Detected” result?

The Galleri MCED test detected DNA methylation patterns that are often associated with cancer in your blood sample. About 1 out of every 100 tests has a Cancer Signal Detected result. False positive results do occur.

This result will also include a prediction of the tissue type or organ associated with the cancer signal, called a Cancer Signal Origin. This helps your doctor determine the next steps for diagnosis.

Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider.  This test result is not a cancer diagnosis and requires follow-up diagnostic testing which may include lab work or imaging ordered by your healthcare provider to confirm cancer.

Cancer Tests False Positive Rates Comparison

One of the Galleri Test’s notable advantages is its low false positive rate, which is approximately 0.5%. This means that among individuals without cancer, only about 1 in 200 may receive a false positive result.

In comparison, traditional single-cancer screening tests can have higher false positive rates. For instance:

Mammography: False positive rates can range from 7% to 12% over a 10-year period, leading to additional imaging or biopsies. For women undergoing annual mammograms, the chance of experiencing at least one false positive over a decade ranges from 50% to 61% according to the Mayo Clinic News Network.

Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Test: Approximately 15% of men with a positive PSA test do not have prostate cancer, resulting in potential overdiagnosis.

Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) (Colorectal Cancer Screening): The FIT has a false positive rate of approximately 5%.

Cologuard (Stool DNA Test for Colorectal Cancer): The Cologuard test has a false positive rate of about 13%, meaning approximately 1 in 10 positive tests may incorrectly indicate cancer or polyps.

Low-Dose CT Scan (Lung Cancer Screening): False positive rates can be significant; for instance, the National Lung Screening Trial reported a false positive rate of approximately 24%.

Understanding these rates is crucial for making informed decisions about cancer screenings. While false positives can lead to unnecessary procedures, early detection remains vital for effective treatment.

It's essential to discuss the benefits and risks of each screening method with a healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate approach based on individual risk factors and health history.

Why does the Galleri MCED test need to be used in addition to other single cancer screening tests such as colonoscopy or mammography?

The test is intended to be used in addition to — and not replace — other cancer screening tests your healthcare provider recommends.

Single-cancer screening tests are recommended because they have been proven to save lives by detecting cancer early. Adding the MCED test to annual wellness visits allows you to go further with cancer screenings.

The Galleri MCED test does not detect a signal for all cancers and not all cancers can be detected in the blood.

Why are additional diagnostic tests needed with a Cancer Signal Detected result?

A Cancer Signal Detected test result is not a cancer diagnosis and requires follow-up diagnostic testing which may include lab work or imaging ordered by your healthcare provider to confirm cancer.

When should I take the Galleri MCED test again if I receive a “No Cancer Signal Detected” result?

Cancer can be unpredictable. The Galleri MCED test can be taken as an annual blood test

Can Dr. Sally share my Galleri MCED test result with one of my healthcare providers?

How Often Should You Take the MCED test?

The Galleri MCED test can be done once a year. Since dangerous cancers can start and spread quickly — sometimes in less than a year — regular testing may help catch them early.

Adding Galleri to your usual cancer screenings could improve the chances of finding cancer in its early stages.

Dr. Sally also offers a subscription option to make yearly testing automatic and easy to schedule.

Galleri works by detecting DNA from cancer cells in your blood. However, it does not check for inherited genetic risks or predict your future risk of getting cancer.

For that, a genetic test — which only needs to be done once — may be helpful.

Use of the Galleri test is not recommended in individuals who are pregnant, 21 years old or younger, or undergoing active cancer treatment
